Follow Jesus

Follow me and be my disciple. Matthew 9:9

Why is it good to follow Jesus?

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

You were physically born from your father and mother, but now you need to be spiritually born child of God. Jesus explains this in chapter 3 of the Gospel of John. If you can, read it completely, for now here are some key verses:

I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. John 3:5-6

To be born spiritually and become a child of God, you must believe in Jesus and receive Him as Lord and Savior:

But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12

If you believe in Jesus and receive and accept Him as Lord and Savior, you must obey what He commanded us to do, if you do not obey Him, it is because you do not really believe in Him. How can you say that you believe Him and you do not obey Him?:

If you love me, obey my commandments. John 14:15

If you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments.. Matthew 19:17

However, it is very difficult to obey what Jesus commanded us to do and we often fail. So, we’re not going to heaven? If we try with all our heart to obey and we failed only because of our human nature, the Grace and Mercy of God covers us, for the work that Jesus did:

The disciples were astounded. Then who in the world can be saved? they asked. Jesus looked at them intently and said: Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible. Matthew 19:25-26

Only God can make possible that we have eternal life in heaven. But it’s really important that we do our best effort to obey Jesus. We can not fool God.

You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it. Matthew 7:13-14

If you really strive to seek the narrow gate of obedience and go through it, God’s grace will cover you when you fail. Do not worry about not being perfect. Only God is perfect.

What was it that Jesus commanded us to do? It’s simple to explain but difficult to meet:

You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments. Matthew 22:37-40

Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. Matthew 7:12

Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20

Finally, when you fail and disobey God, ask Him forgiveness from your heart with the sincere intention not to do it again. And if you expect God to forgive you when you fail, then you should forgive people who fail you.

Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Matthew 3:2

If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:14-15

How can we be sure of who Jesus is?

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. John 1:1-5

So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son. John 1:14

The Father and I are one. John 10:30

Jesus replied: Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? John 14:9

I Am the Messiah! John 4:26

I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die but will live forever. John 6:58

I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life. John 8:12

I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. John 10:9

I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. John 11:25

I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. John 14:6

There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said: Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29

After his resurrection, just before ascending to heaven, Jesus came and told his disciples: I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Matthew 28:18

¿Qué piensas tú sobre Jesús? Aquí hay un escrito de C. S. Lewis (el autor de las Crónicas de Narnia) sobre este tema:

What do you think about Jesus? Here is something C. S. Lewis (author of the Chronicles of Narnia) wrote on this subject:

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic, or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronising nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God.”

If you believe in your heart that Jesus is the Messiah, and you want to receive Him as your Lord and Savior, we invite you to pray:

Prayer: Jesus I believe you are the Messiah, my Lord and Savior and that you sacrificed yourself as the Lamb of God, died for my sins, so that I may have eternal life in heaven, by the grace of God. I believe you’re the light that guides me to life despite the darkness of the world. I believe You are the gate through which I entered the freedom of the Kingdom of God. I believe You are the Resurrection and the Life and that I will live even after death. I believe You are the Way, the Truth and the Life, and I can only come to the Father through you. Therefore, I give you total control of my life, make me the person You want me to be and fulfill Your Purpose in me. Thank you Father in heaven for forgiving my sins, just as I have forgiven those who have sinned against me, and for giving me eternal life. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Now what next? You’re a child of God and you must acquire certain new habits:

  1. God should be your first priority. You should seek your heavenly Father every day.

  2. Seek Him in the Bible, your Father will speak to you through His written Word. Read the Bible every day. Start with the Gospel of John and then continue with the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Do not read it like a book, read it as Divine revelation and each day before reading the Bible, ask your Father to reveal to you what He wants you to understand. Then you can read the book of Acts and the Epistles. Stay a while in the New Testament and you can read the Old Testament when you have deepened your knowledge of the New Testament.

  3. You should also seek your Father who is in heaven, in prayer. Set aside time to be alone with God every day, and tell Him how you feel, what happened to you, your successes and failures, your hits and mistakes. Ask forgiveness for your mistakes and give thanks for all you receive. During the day, keep your communication with Him as with a friend who is always with you. You will never feel lonely and you will always have the wisest advice at hand.

  4. Once you’re on this path, try to meet other Christians with whom to share your experiences and testimony. Look for Christians who follow Jesus with all their heart, believe everything it is written the Gospels and with whom feel good.

  5. Through these new Christian friends, you will also get to know some churches and in some of them you will feel good and you’ll have a desire to congregate there. Allow God to control this process and let Him guide you.
